Do Collagen Supplements Work?

Gimmick or legit glow getter? Collagen is a big trend, a hotly debated, quick fix, wrinkle fighter. We see collagen in powders, topical skincare, drinks, granola bars, pills, and gummies. The claims are endless, and the prices range from cheap to atrocious. The big question is, do collagen supplements work? ⠀

Is collagen an expensive gimmick or a legitimate glow getter worth the investment?

The Science of Collagen

Naturally produced collagen works by stimulating the fibroblasts to increase the size and quantity of the elastin and collagen fibers. The supplements claim skin results such as smoother skin, improved moisture levels, and fewer fine lines. The theory is, if we eat more collagen it will support our natural collagen productions. The reality is the more collagen we have, the younger, the plump and the more healthy our skin looks.

There are over 30 types of collagen that exist in the body. ⠀The bad news, collagen production slows as we age, weakens cell structures and accelerates skin ageing resulting in loose skin, wrinkles, and decreased elasticity. ⠀

CAN I GET COLLAGEN THROUGH FOOD?

YES!!⠀

It is less expensive and proven to be a more effective way to support skin health, repair and boost natural collagen production.⠀

Natural Collagen Boosting Recipe

🌱 Eat a diet that includes glycine and proline.⠀

🌱 Consume foods high in vitamins and minerals. For example, focus on vitamin C-rich foods, these foods will help support natural collagen production.⠀

🌱 Include plenty of colourful, fibre-rich plant foods. ⠀

🌱 Avoid cortisol-induced collagen loss. Chronic stress contributes to the breakdown of dermal tissues creating thinner, less plump prematurely aged skin.⠀

🌱 Please do not waste your money on collagen creams or serums. The molecule is too big and cannot be absorbed through the skin topically. ⠀

🌱 Improve hydration. Certainly, it is good idea to measure your intake until it is a habit. ⠀

For example, if a person is under prolonged stress, eating a standard American diet, has poor quality sleep, poor digestion, and their detoxification pathways are not functioning optimally, the results of this type of supplement will be minimal.⠀
